How do you feel about those credit card applications that bombard your snail-mailbox? I find them beyond annoying. Besides the possibility of one of those pre-approved credit card applications landing in the hands of someone with identity theft on their mind, I don’t need nor want another credit card. Nor do I want to have to fill my shredder with the junk. I want them to just go away, all of them.
Well, I finally found a way. Luckily for those of you who feel the way I do, the Fair Credit Reporting Act requires that the credit reporting agencies maintain a list of consumers who do not want to receive pre-approved or pre-screened credit card or insurance offers. To opt-out, visit https://www.optoutprescreen.com/?rf=t – notice the “https” which means it’s a secure site and you should see the little locked padlock in your browser.
You’ll have to give your name and address, of course. They also ask for your Social Security Number and birth date but you aren’t required to give those. They do warn that your request may not be properly processed without them. I would try it without at first and if it doesn’t work, you can always go back and include that information then.
On the site, you can opt-out for five years or you can print and mail the application for permanent removal. You can also opt-in if you’ve changed your mind and want to receive offers again.
About a year ago, I submitted my information (not my Social Security number or my birth date) and told them to all leave me alone and they have. I can’t remember the last time I got a credit card application and I’m hoping that by making that statement, I didn’t just jinx myself!
