Marilyn and I have finally found a WordPress plugin that creates Google XML Sitemaps that we like enough to install on our own blog after testing! Trust me, this is a big deal!

The Google XML Sitemaps WordPress Plugin will automatically generate an XML sitemap and keep it updated as you publish posts and pages on your WordPress powered website or blog. It will then notify both Google and Bing about the updated Sitemap.

Google defines a Sitemap as:

Sitemaps are a way to tell Google about pages on your site we might not otherwise discover. In its simplest terms, a XML Sitemap-usually called Sitemap, with a capital S-is a list of the pages on your website. Creating and submitting a Sitemap helps make sure that Google knows about all the pages on your site, including URLs that may not be discoverable by Google’s normal crawling process.

Having an XML Sitemap for your WordPress website or blog gives you a little bit more help getting your website noticed by Google and Bing and that is a very good thing.

When discussing search engines and search engine optimization with High Aspiration, Inc.’s clients, I’m always looking for real-life explanations to make it easier for clients of all technical levels to understand.

This article, by Jill Whalen, is a perfect example of applying real-life to optimizing a website for both users and search engines. It is a bit lengthy, but worth reading. Its examples are such that anyone, of any technical level, can understand and put to use for their own website.

Author Jill Whalen, of High Rankings, says:

Optimizing anything is going to be difficult because it’s nearly impossible to make things absolutely perfect. And being the best you can be at anything is rarely easy. For the most part, we can never truly optimize our websites, as there will always be something else that can be done to perfect it even more. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t always keep trying to perfect it.

Sometimes a client wants to sacrifice the usability of their website in order to attain high rankings in the search engines. High rankings are wonderful, but if the website that is clicked to is a turn-off to a human being, what good has been done? None I think. Worse still, a website that is a turn-off doesn’t get business and that was the whole point of wanting the high rankings in the first place wasn’t it?
