Regularly update your operating system and software. It’s the best way to patch security holes! If you don’t like to setup automatic updates, then remember to do them manually.

Speaking as someone who spent the last week trying to figure out what was wrong with my machine, replacing a failing hard drive, and now still knee deep in reinstalling everything, access to a full backup of your hard drive is priceless!
